Summary

It is the story of the Galactic Empire, crumbling after twelve thousand years of rule。 And it is the particular story of psycho-historian Hari Seldon, the only man who can see the horrors the future has in store: a dark age of ignorance, barbarism and violence that will last for thirty thousand years。 Gathering together a band of courageous men and women, Seldon leads them to a hidden location at the edge of the galaxy where he hopes they can preserve human knowledge and wisdom against all who would destroy them。
Asimov went on to add numerous sequels and prequels to the trilogy, building up what has become known as the Foundation series, but it is the original three books, first published in the Forties and Fifties, which remain the most powerful, imaginative and breathtaking。

I kept reading about references to this series。 From other authors and science-minded people on podcasts。 This did not disappoint。 Helluva trilogy。 Super interesting and engaging。 That Isaac, man, he can write!!

Finally finished this classic。 Great books!

I thought this would be a nice science fiction book, but after finishing the first part (Foundation) and the beginning of the second I ended by leaving the books。Yes it is a book about fictitious sciences in the future but the main part of the book seems more political and discussions between 2 people talking for pages at a time。 What changes between the chapters are the time period and the 2 persons talking about one general idea (the main plot of Seldon) and 'what if' and 'outcomes'。Not the ty I thought this would be a nice science fiction book, but after finishing the first part (Foundation) and the beginning of the second I ended by leaving the books。Yes it is a book about fictitious sciences in the future but the main part of the book seems more political and discussions between 2 people talking for pages at a time。 What changes between the chapters are the time period and the 2 persons talking about one general idea (the main plot of Seldon) and 'what if' and 'outcomes'。Not the type of book I like to read。 。。。more

A very good book, liked the way the suspense was build up and how the plot was unfolded。 A good read for anyone who does not like a very long story and useless character development who do not contribute to further the plot of the story and remain like fillers。

All of this has been carefully analyzed, and the seeds of a new galactic empire planted by one Harry Seldon, who, at the start of the book is one of the most brilliant psychologists and mathematicians in the history of the galaxy。 Through his developed work in psychohistory, he is able to foresee the fall of the galactic empire。 In an effort to shorten a 30,000-year dark age in the empire, he plants two foundations of scientists at “opposite ends of the galaxy” who will be the seeds of the new, better galactic empire, while also cutting the dark age short to just 1,000 years。 Seldon attempts to predict all of the next thousand years of history through the eyes of his mathematics and probabilities and attempts to set-up the initial conditions in such a way that history will follow a directed path。 In this way, the overarching theme of the book is free-will versus determinism。 Do we have a pre-determined path, or can we change the future? The problem is, psychohistory can only predict the ways societies evolve on the macro-scale (i。e。 large number of individuals and how they are influenced by factor such as war, trade, and religion)。 He cannot predict what the individual will do, so Seldon has to keep his ultimate goals secret, only showing himself to the people via recording during key moments of history called “Seldon Crises。” The reader follows multiple characters over the next 400 years。 In this way, you never follow one character too long, and the book never follows one character-driven narrative for an extended period of the book。 Instead, you follow different characters in different points in history as a device to get perspective on the grand ideas Asimov is attempting to tackle; albeit often times the characters do at least know of each other。 In this way, some readers may find the story dry, as it is primarily focused on how characters interact through dialog – rarely action。 However, I often found that the book was written as much like a mystery novel as sci-fi。 There are obviously important things going on behind the scenes, whether that be the empire’s downfall, the second foundation’s motivations, or Seldon’s plan, and we are able to discover what these mysteries are through the ideas of the characters。 And I will say, the characters themselves are interesting enough to keep you entertained and on edge during key points in the book。 Rarely was I ever bored reading。 It was also fun to read this story through the eyes of how people spoke an acted in the 50s, which as when the book was written, then placed that in a futuristic society。 Certainly, there is more of an emphasis on talking over cigars than I would have ever envisioned from a modern author。 Certainly, Asimov was a sci-fi genius。 To have little-to-no prior work to base this story off of is one of the top accomplishments in the history of sci-fi, and the book is still approachable today (i。e。 not dated)。 I will give the same criticism here that I did of Dune, which seems to be a plague of classic sci-fi。 The only part of the story that I will complain about is in descriptions of settings。 I often read sci-fi because I am interested of settings of future societies – how their economies work, what their building and structures look like, is there AI or robots, how are wars fought, etc。? Also, just basic descriptions such as what a room looks like, or what are some nuances of a city; all of that was in the book, but not detailed enough for me to really get a firm grasp on setting。 Asimov clearly had a galactic vision, it would have just been nice to get in his head on paper。 However, all of that can be ignored because Asimov was not focused on this。 Instead, he was determined (and successful) and creating one of the most grandiose plots sci-fi ever constructed, and in doing so, inspired a genre。 。。。more
